Most of the infrastructure Aotearoa needs over the next 30 years already exists. As kaitiaki, or guardians, we need to look after the buildings and networks we have so we can hand them over to future generations as assets, not burdens.
Asset management is the coordinated activity of an organisation to realise the value from its assets. It means having the right things, in the right place, at the right time, managed by the right people.
The resources in this section have been developed to support those working in infrastructure asset management – from planning, building, operating, maintaining, renewing to disposing of or recycling assets across their life cycle. The resources can also be useful for decision-makers and others with an interest in our public infrastructure assets.
We'll continue to update and add to these resources over time.
Resources and research
Te Waihanga has a range of resources and research available that can support asset managers.
An infrastructure investment challenge
As identified in the National Infrastructure Plan, renewing and maintaining existing infrastructure assets will be our greatest investment challenge in the future.
The Plan includes a number of recommendations and priority actions to address this challenge. One of those recommendations is to strengthen asset management assurance. The Government supports this recommendation and has directed Te Waihanga and Treasury to establish a new assurance function covering asset management and investment planning.
To enable this, Treasury is developing the policy for the new assurance function, due by October 2026, and Te Waihanga will work towards launching the asset management assurance function on 1 July 2027.
